Congratulations to Sanjeev Nandakumuran, MD! Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) Volunteers are needed for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program at Chinatown Service Center (CSC). The VITA program will help low-income individuals and families prepare their 2009 income tax return. The program is co-sponsored by the Chinatown Service Center, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and California Franchise Tax Board (FTB).Individuals over 21 years of age and speak fluent English, and Cantonese/Mandarin/Vietnamese are encouraged to join the Training Program. Basic computer skills are required. Training and materials are provided free of charge. Participants who pass the test at the end of the training are requested to volunteer at least 15 hours of service in preparing Federal and State Income Tax Returns (short forms only, i.e., 1040EZ, 1040A, 540EZ, and 540A) at the Chinatown Service Center. An IRS and FTB certificate will be granted to each volunteer upon completion of training and satisfactory service. The VITA services help low-income families in the community and will begin in late January to Mid April, 2010. Participants must attend all the training sessions to be held on Saturdays, December 5, 12, 2009 and January 9, 16 and 23, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at CSC Office at 767 N. Hill Street, Suite 400, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Holiday Food Basket and Toy Distribution Event On Saturday, December 19, Southern California Chinese Lawyers Association (SCCLA) will distribute the Holiday Food Basket and toy distribution to be provided by Asian Pacific American Women Lawyers Association (APAWLA) and Asian Professional Exchange (APEX) in conjunction with Asians & Americans 4 Action at Chinatown Service Center from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in Los Angeles. Food baskets and toys will be distributed to the families of Chinatown Service Center. The “Holiday Food Basket and Toy Distribution Event” is one of the highlights for the families of Chinatown Service Center as well as providing an opportunity for community involvement. The Chinatown Service Center serves the needs of elderly and low-income families in Los Angeles County including Chinatown, Monterey Park, San Gabriel Valley and surrounding areas. The mission of the Chinatown Service Center is to offer education, health and human services to Asian and other immigrant communities, to enhance their ability to contribute to the social, economic and cultural fabric of the United States. Each year, the Center helps over 12,000 individuals, children, seniors and families through its Social Services, Employment Placement and Resources, Counseling, Family Health Programs, Community Economic Development and Youth Programs. |
