Fall Health Fair 2016

CSC-5.JPG

Approximately 300 fair attendees came to our CSC-CHC Fall Health Fair on the morning of Saturday, November 12, 2016
Fair attendees learned and benefited from the Hepatitis Educational Workshop, conducted in English and Chinese, by guest speaker Mimi Chang, a Senior Nurse Practitioner who heads the Asian Pacific Liver Center at St. Vincent Medical Center. The idea that hepatitis is very prevalent in the Asian community, is a surprise for many. Fair attendees also enjoyed the free information and relevant resources from our booths, courtesy of our sixteen community partners. Their presence is critical, as they were able to offer critical health screenings, such as BMI, cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure, Hepatitis and bone density tests to eager fair attendees. Fair attendees were thankful of our raffle prizes as well. We were able to give gift cards, food baskets, as well as turkeys – just in time for the Thanksgiving holidays.

Overall, everybody involved with the fair had a good and productive time. Our community partners were happy for the opportunity to reach out to such a large amount of people, our staffs and volunteers were happy to coordinate an even that was important and helpful to the community, and finally, the community was also happy with CSC’s work: 81% surveyed said they came for the free screenings and workshop, 95% surveyed rated the fair as excellent, and 100% said they would come back!

Medi-Cal for Kids (SB75) ~ Undocumented children now have access to Medi-Cal. Chinatown Service Center will be helping the community enroll families to Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal

SB 75 is a new law in California that gives full scope Medi-Cal to children under the age of 19 regardless of their immigration status who met the eligibility requirements for Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal provides children with free or low-cost preventive medical care and treatments including vision, dental and mental health. It also covers alcohol and drug use treatment, drugs your doctor orders, and more. It is anticipated that SB 75 will be implemented on May 1st, 2016 and Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) indicates that the state systems will be ready to enroll children into full scope medical beginning May 16, 2016. All children with restricted-scope Medi-Cal (also known as “emergency Medi-Cal”) will automatically transition to full scope Medi-Cal without having to fill out a new application.

In order for children to qualify for full scope Medi-Cal, the family income must be at or below 266% federal poverty level. For instance for a family of 4, they must earn $5,387 per month or less, family of five $6,305 per month or less and family of six $7,222 per month or less.

CSC will be helping families enroll to Medi-Cal. When you apply for Medi-Cal, bring as many of the following items as you can:

1. Proof of Identity (driver’s license or photo ID)
2. Proof of Income (current pay stub)
3. Child’s Birth Certificate (regardless of the country of origin)
4. Proof of Residency (telephone or electric bill)
